JavaScript getTime() Method

Definition and Usage

The getTime() method returns the number of milliseconds since midnight of January 1, 1970.

Syntax

dateObject.getTime()


Tips and Notes

Note: This method is always used in conjunction with a Date object.

Example

In this example we will get how many milliseconds since 1970/01/01 and print it:

var d = new Date();
document.write(d.getTime() + " milliseconds since 1970/01/01");
</script>

The output of the code above will be:

1336832603425 milliseconds since 1970/01/01


Example 2

 In the following example we will calculate the number of years since 1970/01/01:

var minutes = 1000*60;
var hours = minutes*60;
var days = hours*24;
var years = days*365;
var d = new Date();
var t = d.getTime();
var y = t/years;
document.write("It's been: " + y + " years since 1970/01/01!");
</script>

The output of the code above will be:

It's been: 42.39068377175292 years since 1970/01/01!
